FIRST VISIT FAQ's

1. Is bouldering suitable for beginners?
Absolutely! Bouldering is a great way to get into climbing, even if you’ve never climbed before. At BlocHaus, we have boulders for all abilities, including plenty of beginner-friendly routes to help you get started.

2. What should I expect from my first bouldering session?
Your first visit to a bouldering gym can feel a little daunting, but there’s no need to worry. Our friendly team will explain how bouldering works, show you around the centre and help you get started. Then it’s time to climb, explore and have fun!

3. Do I need any climbing experience to go bouldering in Manchester?
No experience is needed. Bouldering is one of the easiest forms of climbing to try for the first time, and you can climb at your own pace. Whether you’re completely new to climbing or looking for something different to do in Manchester, you’re welcome at BlocHaus.

4. What should I wear for bouldering?
Wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely. You don’t need any specialist clothing or equipment for your first visit. We hire climbing shoes at reception, or you can bring your own if you already have a pair.

5. Do I need climbing shoes for bouldering?
Yes, climbing shoes are recommended for bouldering. If you’re new to climbing, you can hire a pair of climbing shoes from BlocHaus when you arrive, so there’s no need to buy your own before your first session.

6. Do I need to book to go bouldering at BlocHaus?
There's no need to book! Unless you're looking for an instructor-led induction, you're welcome to just turn up.

7. How long does a bouldering session last?
There’s no set session length. Your entry gives you access to BlocHaus for the day, so you can climb for as long as you like. For a first-time bouldering session, around 1–2 hours is usually plenty .

8. What is bouldering?
Bouldering is a type of climbing on shorter walls without ropes or harnesses. Thick safety mats cover the floor beneath the climbing walls, and climbs are known as ‘blocs’. You can try different blocs at your own level and work your way up as you improve.

9. Is bouldering good for people who aren’t very strong or fit?
Yes! You don’t need to be particularly strong or fit to try bouldering. Climbing uses balance, movement, coordination and technique as well as strength. You’ll learn as you go and improve naturally with practice.

10. Can I go bouldering on my own?
Of course. Lots of people visit BlocHaus on their own, and our community makes it easy to meet other climbers. If you’d rather climb with others, keep an eye out for our social sessions and community events.

11. What happens when I arrive at BlocHaus?
Head to the desk when you arrive and let our team know it’s your first time. We’ll get you checked in, sort out your climbing shoes and explain everything you need to know before you start climbing.

12. Where can I try beginner bouldering in Manchester?
BlocHaus is an independent bouldering gym in Manchester, offering climbing for complete beginners through to experienced climbers. With beginner-friendly problems, climbing shoes available to hire and a welcoming community, it’s a great place to start your bouldering journey.
